London Clay Birds

Each bird is unique. Made using London clay. They are sculpted to represent the city's little birds - wrens, robins, tits etc. As the clay is unpurified I get a variety of effects when they are fired. Some turn an almost terracota red colour others go dark brown, I aslo find some turn out smooth and others are textured. As I said, they're all different. I polish with a bit of wax and let them be. They are very tactile objects, lovely to hold and have a quality not unlike a stress ball.

London clay is a marine deposit from the Paleogene period - 60/50 million years ago. London was, back then, covered by a warm tropical sea. Each bird comes in its very own handmade bag.
